I first heard Damien Rice while I was watching the deadly-depressing movie, Closer. Man, that movie was sad, but I loved it, and Damien Rice’s “The Blower’s Daughter” fit perfectly in the opening scene.
Not long after seeing the movie, I was introduced properly to his album O. I was instantly hooked. A whole chunk of time past before he finally released his second full length, 9, and I was a little thrown off by it. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t know what to think of the album, as it didn’t capture me the in the same way O did three years earlier.
It was not until the summer of 2008 that I realized how much I loved 9. While interning for the Cherokee Nation, I would take drives to the office by myself with Damien Rice in my headphones. Something about the openness of the Oklahoma countryside coupled with Rice’s infectious voice had me coming back to the album over and over again.
With the release of a new song (‘bout time), I thought it would be perfect to give today’s song of the day to Damien Rice.
The song is entitled “Elephant” from his second album, 9.
Enjoy.
