5 plays

Saul Williams is a collection of many things: Slam/spoken word poet, hip-hop artist, rock ‘n roller, published writer. To me, he’s a visionary of syntax and an inspiration.

I first witnessed his brillance as he opened for my favorite band, The Mars Volta (incidentally, you won’t see their music as Song of the Day) at the Seattle Showbox in the summer of 2003. At the time, I didn’t know he was a hip-hop artist, as he opened with his slam poetry, and not music.

When I found out that he had an album, I instantly went out a bought it. On first play, I was taken aback, because I’d never been one to gravitate toward hip-hop or rap. But his words, holy balls, his words were infectious. I was in love with this man. After two proceeding albums, I am still in love with Saul Williams.

This track is off of his first album, Amethyst Rock Star, and is entitled “1987.”

Enjoy.
